Those passing along The Street will have noticed that the former BT phone box outside the Old Post Office was given a fresh coat of “Post Office Red” lead-free paint last year.
It was on 17th May 2009 that the phone apparatus was removed by BT along with 100’s of others up and down the country. Following this and a local consultation, the Parish Council acquired it for its heritage value for a nominal sum. Since then it has been used as an information point. Do pop in if you have never done so!
It’s the “K6” model with Tudor Crown and local knowledge says that it was installed in the late 1940’s. Prior to that a local resident recalls that to make a call you had to go inside the Post Office and make one from there. This was prior to the time when phones were generally available. The Post Office closed in 1968.
Further refurbishment work is planned for this summer. It needs another coat of paint, the base needs black paint, and the interior ceiling needs white paint. The metal windows also need sealing to prevent damp. If anyone would like to help in this work, please contact Roger Smith (01508 538225). All materials and tools will be supplied.
